Every year in May, Gutau becomes a place of festivity. Blue Dyers and crafters from five European countries meet for the traditional Blue Dyeing Market in the Mühlviertel.

On Sunday, 5th May 2024, the market square and neighbouring streets will be filled with “blue dyeing”.

An entertaining programme with live music, a fashion show, guided tours through the dyer’s museum and the church, indigo dyeing demonstrations and excellent food will complete the day.

Exhibitors

Every year, blue dyers from various European countries gather at the traditional blue dyeing market to showcase their rare craft. These artisans not only display their skills but also offer the UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage of “blue dyeing” for sale. Designers utilize blue dyeing techniques for modern fashion creations, adding a touch of historical craftsmanship to contemporary styles. Additionally, the market features a variety of handicrafts related to blue dyeing, further celebrating this vibrant and ancient art form.

Programme

The organisers of the Blue Dyeing Market have once again put together a varied supporting programme to offer visitors an entertaining day. The programme includes dance and music performances, a traditional costume and fashion show as well as church tours and church tower tours. There is also the opportunity to experience blue dyeing with indigo in the Zeugfärberei and guided tours of the dye museum.

Travelling by public transport possible again in 2024

As travelling by special bus from Pregarten was so well received in 2023, we have created this option again this year.

This was the blue dyeing market in 2022

On the first Sunday in May, the 2022 Blue Dyeing Market celebrated its 20th anniversary. As every year, visitors from near and far came to Gutau to experience the colourful event. Craftsmen and women proudly displayed their skills and presented their products.

This year, we were especially pleased to receive coverage from Mühlviertel.TV, who produced a report on the market.
